Set 2 – Developing ideas #3

In this picture I used a roller brush to paint the background of the work.  Unfortunately the coverage of the brush wasn’t very good but I persisted with the picture.  I used the brush to attempt a snow flake effect which unfortunately looked more like splatter.  This particular image is one that greatly interests me however.

Set 2 – Developing Ideas #1

Undertaking more research for Project 2… What has become evident to me, although the blizzard caused inconvenience, destruction and death, most imagery (below) captures laughter and life continuing as usual. Additionally, images are predominantly black and white with a splash of colour.

Set 1 – Ideas and execution

My initial idea was to do use an image of Lady as the centre of my artwork.  I decided against the initial drawing that I made as I felt it was not subjective, and therefore not addressing the assignment brief.  As earlier stated, I have a fondness for photography.  I further enjoyed the popart animal series by Thierry Bisch.  I manipulated a photograph of a Staffordshire Terrier dog, dramatically changing the hue and saturation, to achieve an abstract image.  I chose to use the colour pink as Lady was quite the petite and precious dog.  I cropped the picture so that I only saw half of the dogs face.

In putting the image to create my piece, I used a graphite pencil to draw the image on the paper.  I then mixed vermilion with titanium white for the majority of the work.  I also used Flow Medium as the area to cover was vast.  I then applied a coat to the work however found that it neither covered well nor did I have enough.  I then needed to mix a second batch without the Flow Medium.  The colour was slightly lighter than the previous but looked good against the original colour.  I chose to leave a section of the painting in the original (darker) colour to give more contrast.

The next colour mixed was vermilion, cobalt and titanium to achieve a lilac colour.  The lilac was used sparingly.  I then mixed cobalt with the titanium for the next prominent colour on the artwork.  Finally, carbon black was used

Using Twombly as inspiration, I used a line from the Lighthouse Family’s song “High”. The song always made me think of Lady.  The line I used is one that impacts me the most in the song.  I considered writing the text into the painting however I did not feel that I could produce text that would be symmetrical and interesting.  I then typed the text and printed it, cutting out each individual letter then applying it with glue to the work.

The lyrics precisely represent the personal event on 26th December 2010

It will always be forever you and me”

Set 1 – Developing ideas #5

Using Cy Twombly as inspiration to my own work, being that he incorporated poetry into his paintings, I will be incorporating lyrics from the Lighthouse Family’s High. Whilst Cy’s work is peaceful, I do not intend my work to show serenity as this was a most traumatic event.

This song has always been relevant to my relationship with Lady. I think that it became even more so with her passing, there are a few paragraphs that impact which I have bolded. It seems strange to now know that the song came from the album Postcards from Heaven

When you’re close to tears remember
Some day it’ll all be over
One day we’re gonna get so high
And though it’s darker than December
What’s ahead is a different colour
One day we’re gonna get so high

And at the end of the day
remember the days
When we were close to the edge
And we’ll wonder how we made it through the night
The end of the day
remember the way
We stayed so close till the end
We’ll remember it was me and you

‘Cause we are gonna be forever you and me
You will always keep me flying high in the sky of love

Don’t you think it’s time you started
Doing what we always wanted
One day we’re gonna get so high
‘Cause even the impossible
is easy when we got each other
One day ‘we’re gonna get so high

And at
The end of the day
remember the days
when we were close to the edge
And we’ll wonder how we made it through the night
The end of the day
remember the way
We stayed so close to till the end
We’ll remember it was me and you.

‘Cause we are gonna be forever you and me
You will always keep me flying high in the sky of love (x2)

High, high, high, high.(x2)

And at
The end of the day
remember the days
when we were close to the edge
And we’ll wonder how we made it through the night
The end of the day
remember the way
We stayed so close to till the end
We’ll remember it was me and you.

It will always be forever you and me
You will always keep me flying high in the sky of love (x3)

Studio – Experimenting with photocopied pictures

In undertaking my collage I searched for imagery on relating to bad weather. These pictures were sourced from the internet. Two collages were made using the material I sourced on my weather project. The first collage I made was in my opinion a complete failure. It was a failure as it was a drawing of a park in snow with an umbrealla in the foreground. The colaging however had no depth and the picture appeared like a big blob of newspaper clippings. I then created a second collage in a more simplified subject but still in the theme of my original idea.
In the second collage I painted into the picture to give details to the drawing. Again, I was not happy with the outcome of my picture, however the picture was then glazed.

Set 1 – Developing Ideas #3

This picture, in my opinion, clearly depicts my feelings then and now.

To explain this painting:

  • The dog on the outside represents Lady
  • The heart represents me
